What is crowding?

Teeth crowding occurs when there is a lack of space for all the teeth to fit normally in correct alignment within the jaws. This usually happens when the tooth is larger or more (in number) than the available space in the jaw. This causes the teeth to be twisted or rotated, misplaced, or sometimes stuck within the bone. It can be caused by a disharmony in tooth to jaw size relationship as seen in patients with narrow upper and/or lower jaw. It can also be caused by early or late loss of primary/baby teeth, or improper eruption of teeth.

What can I do to correct crowding?

Crowding, as detected in young patients, can be minimally corrected or avoided by addressing the growth and development issues of the jaws like a narrow upper or lower jaw. In these cases, we start orthodontic treatment with an oral appliance that expands the jaw to make space for the eruption of the permanent teeth.

Although appliances can still be utilized in older patients, expansion is minimal and may take a longer time because the bone is denser. Other options can be considered such as extracting or pulling out a few teeth, or shaving a very thin layer of tooth enamel on the sides of the teeth to make space for adjustment and alignment. All these procedures are done in conjunction with orthodontic treatment.

What will happen if I do not correct my crowded teeth?

Aside from esthetic concerns, crowded teeth are harder to clean so they increase the chance of getting gum disease and decay. Crowding also causes a misaligned bite, and teeth not being in contact with each other can cause more jaw problems further down the line. Through orthodontic treatment, space is regained so teeth can be moved into their correct positions.
