Are you missing one or two of your adult teeth because they have failed to come out? You may have an impacted tooth!
What are impacted teeth in orthodontics?
Impacted teeth simply mean a tooth that is “stuck” inside the bone and failed to erupt or “come out” through the gums. While all teeth may get impacted, the canines are the second most common tooth to be impacted after the wisdom tooth. However, unlike wisdom teeth that rarely have functions and often develop painful infections, the canines are critical teeth in guiding the rest of your teeth to proper “bite”.
Due to their important role in teeth and jaw alignment, impacted canines are exposed routinely at Embrace Smiles Orthodontics in conjunction with orthodontic treatment with Dr Chong. As a dual-board certified orthodontist and periodontist, Dr Chong is highly skilled and sought after in the San Jose and surrounding Sotuh Bay Areas to not only create sufficient space for impacted teeth but also simultaneously perform exposure of the impacted canines.
What does the surgical exposure of impacted teeth entail?
The exposure of impacted teeth is an out-patient procedure at our state of the art surgical suite at Embrace Smiles Orthodontics, and involves surgically exposing the impacted tooth through a conservative incision in the gums. Once exposed, an attachment is bonded to the surface of the impacted tooth to allow the orthodontist to guide the tooth into alignment. Dr Chong’s immediate activation of the impacted tooth or teeth allows immediate traction of the impacted tooth into the mouth.
The process of gently guiding an impacted tooth into alignment should be comfortable and rewarding. Although some discomfort will be present after the procedure, the gums will heal around the exposed tooth as it moves. After the procedure is completed, our team at Embrace Smiles Orthodontics will review guidelines to prevent infections and alleviate any discomfort.
