What is an abnormal frenum?
Abnormal frenum in the upper lip causes a gap or space between the front teeth which results in esthetic and orthodontic concerns. It compromises the health of the gums if attached too closely to the teeth as it pulls the gums upward. If the abnormal frenum is the one connecting the tongue, it is called a tongue-tie, and difficulty in swallowing and speaking might indicate the need for a frenectomy.
What is a frenectomy?
A frenectomy is a procedure that involves the removal of the frenum with a small incision. The frenum is a connective tissue that attaches one surface within the mouth to another. A frenectomy is most commonly performed between the upper lip and front 2 teeth. A lingual frenectomy or “tongue-tie” procedure is done to release the frenum between the tongue and the floor of the mouth.
Why do you need a frenectomy and how is it done?
One of the most common issues resulting from an abnormal frenum is esthetic concerns due to a gap created between the two upper front teeth. If this is not removed, the space will be difficult to close and stay closed after orthodontic treatment. If the abnormal frenum is the one connecting the tongue, the patient might have breathing or airway issues as well as speech difficulty, which results in a higher tendency to compensate with irregular jaw movements to speak properly causing more orthodontic problems. At Embrace Smiles Orthodontics, Dr Chong identifies these problems as early as the first visit and will provide you with a comprehensive plan to address frenum issues along with orthodontic treatment.
The procedure involves making a small, swift incision to release the tie. The incision will then be stitched together in their new position. Our highly-trained clinical team will discuss post-surgery instructions with you to prevent infection and ensure fast recovery.
